The importance of words

I felt sorry for the person responsible after the BBC was left red-faced on Friday following its latest subtitle blunder ushered in the Chinese New Year as the “year of the whores” instead of the year of the horse.

Some people were quick enough to screengrab and twitter went a bit crazy.

But phonetics would always have this issue especially if they are transmitting live and they a dictionary of words like ‘whore’ in their database used more than the word ‘horse’ – I would blame all those gritty dramas …. Previous subtitle gaffes on the BBC include a call for a moment’s violence during the Queen Mother’s funeral in 2002, while on another occasion one reporter’s subtitles famously claimed pigs nibbled willies instead of wellies.

Last year, Ofcom announced plans for regular audits on the quality of broadcasters’ subtitles following complaints.

Poor BBC
