The Importance of Titles

Movie title sequences can often be the most important part of a film. Setting the tone, atmosphere and characters for the audience, the opening credits can either make or break an opening scene.

This latest film by Ridley Scott shows how a subtle low budget (relative to actors and specially shot scenes) title sequence can enhance the viewing experience.

It has to marry the subtlety of story and also convey the theme of the film / series. Off the top of my head i can think of some more recent series that work well like Dexter and True Blood.

Why does Dexter’s title sequence fascinate us to the point that we watch it repeatedly? How do the shots, the editing and the music contribute to our understanding of Dexter and his world? How does this short sequence prepare us to enter a different reality in which we enjoy a serial killer pursuing the deeds of his secret affects?

The link is that both are done by Digital Kitchen a visual agency that has done some great work for HBO and other titles like 6 feet under ……

Making titles is an art – and one that is often last on the list when it comes to budgeting – but for me it is the key to the hook and one that we regularly commission and farm out to other creatives with the experience to make magic so that our clients can feast from the first second.
